The Case Against AI Development: A Critical Perspective
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has taken center stage in discussions of the future of technology and is oft-heralded as the next great leap in human progress. But among all the fanaticism are real reasons for proceeding with caution, if not abstaining, from developing AI. While it is clear that AI can bring vast benefits to health, education, and business, among others, there are equally, if not more, convincing reasons to consider the ethical, social, and existential implications this technology may have. Some of the reasons why the development of AI should be toned down will be discussed hereafter.
1. Ethical Considerations
Most AI systems, but more particularly machine learning algorithms, are somewhat impenetrable in decisions. It is also potentially biased in its outcomes since any algorithm that is trained on biased data might perpetuate and further exaggerate social inequalities. These aspects are showing erosion into privacy down to the level of authoritarian control, where civil liberties would be cut down to size.
7. Environmental Impact
Building up and deploying AI applications requires immense computational power, hence huge energy consumption. This is an environmental concern because the energy that powers large-scale AI models contributes to the increase in carbon emissions and other ecological damages. While responding to global warming, a path that might be prioritized is one which leads to technologies with lower environmental footprints.
